A 26-year-old man, Ebenezer Frimpong, has been arrested in Ghana’s Ashanti Region after allegedly stealing a Ghana Police Service armoured vehicle from Nkawie Market in a dramatic daylight incident that triggered a high-speed security chase.
The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. when the armoured vehicle, bearing registration number GP 1131, was reportedly being driven from Nkawie to Kumasi for routine servicing.
According to police reports, the driver, General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi, briefly stopped near the market to purchase medication from a pharmacy after experiencing a stomach upset. The officer reportedly left the engine running while stepping away from the vehicle.
Moments later, Frimpong allegedly jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off toward Abuakwa, causing panic among bystanders and prompting an immediate police response.
A coordinated pursuit involving Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) motor riders and a SWAT patrol team was launched shortly after the theft was reported. After an intense chase lasting approximately 30 minutes, the suspect was intercepted and arrested at Mim near the Abuakwa–Kumasi stretch.
Frimpong was subsequently charged with stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act. He pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the Kwadaso Circuit Court on May 4, 2026.
Presiding judge, His Honour Jephtha Appau, ordered that the suspect undergo a psychiatric evaluation before further proceedings continue.
In a surprising moment during his first court appearance, Frimpong reportedly appealed for leniency and asked the court to assist him in joining the Ghana Police Service.
The court has remanded him into prison custody, and he is expected to reappear before the court on May 18, 2026.
