John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to deliver his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament of Ghana on Friday, February 27, 2026, as required under Article 67 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

The address will provide a comprehensive assessment of the state of the nation and outline the government’s legislative priorities, policy direction, and development agenda for the year ahead, just over one year after President Mahama returned to office on January 7, 2025.

Parliamentary Arrangements and Schedule

To allow for preparations ahead of the address, Parliament will adjourn early on Thursday, February 26, following a sitting scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Parliamentary authorities say the adjustment is intended to ensure smooth coordination of logistics, security, and media coverage.

Media Accreditation and Coverage Guidelines

Parliament has issued specific guidelines for media coverage of the 2026 SONA:

  • Accreditation Deadline: Journalists who are not members of the Parliamentary Press Corps must apply for accreditation through the Director of Media Relations by Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

  • Broadcast Protocols: To prevent congestion within the parliamentary chamber and its environs, media houses have been encouraged to rely on a clean broadcast feed that will be made available for live transmission.

Expected Focus of the Address

President Mahama is expected to address key national priorities, including:

  • Economic recovery and fiscal stability

  • Healthcare delivery and public health reforms

  • Education policy and infrastructure

  • Roads, energy, and other critical infrastructure projects

  • Governance, accountability, and social protection

The President will also evaluate progress made under his administration’s policy framework since assuming office, highlighting achievements, challenges, and plans to accelerate development.

Context: Mahama’s First Address in 2025

President Mahama delivered his maiden SONA of the current term on February 27, 2025, during which he described Ghana’s economy as being in an “unprecedented crisis.” In that address, he unveiled his “Reset Agenda,” aimed at stabilizing the economy, restoring investor confidence, and laying the foundation for sustainable growth.

Following the 2025 address, the Finance Minister presented the national budget on March 11, 2025, translating the administration’s policy direction into fiscal measures.

National Significance

The State of the Nation Address remains one of the most important constitutional events on Ghana’s political calendar, offering Parliament, civil society, and the general public an opportunity to assess the government’s performance and policy direction.

The 2026 address is expected to draw significant national attention as Ghanaians look for clarity on economic recovery, job creation, and long-term development strategies.
