John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to promoting equitable development across Ghana during a meeting with the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs.

Addressing the delegation, led by Nene Sakite II, the President highlighted ongoing government efforts to strengthen infrastructure and expand economic opportunities. He noted that renewed investor confidence, driven by recent economic improvements, is being leveraged to support national development. Among key initiatives, he mentioned plans to operationalize the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences Bunso, aimed at advancing education and innovation in the region.

The President emphasized the country’s improving macroeconomic outlook, stating that Ghana is meeting its debt obligations, experiencing declining inflation, and benefiting from a relatively stable currency. He added that the economy has become more resilient, capable of withstanding external shocks, including those linked to global conflicts. Following the successful completion of the IMF programme, he assured that government would maintain fiscal discipline to sustain these gains.

Despite this progress, John Dramani Mahama acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly in addressing youth unemployment. He stressed the importance of private sector growth and investment in key sectors such as agriculture to create jobs and absorb the growing workforce. Additionally, he noted that the uncapping of the District Assembly Common Fund will enable Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies to retain a larger share of resources to support local development projects, including 24-hour economy markets.

On the health front, the President outlined ongoing efforts to improve access to healthcare, including the rollout of the Free Primary Health Care initiative, alongside existing programmes such as the National Health Insurance Scheme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. He also assured the chiefs that the Eastern Regional Hospital project will be completed, indicating that contractors have been directed to return to site, with plans underway to commence additional hospital projects in newly created regions.

In response, Nene Sakite II commended the government for its development efforts in the region and expressed optimism about continued collaboration. He noted that traditional authorities are closely observing ongoing projects and remain hopeful that progress will be sustained.

The meeting was also attended by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and other senior government officials, reflecting the importance of the engagement in strengthening partnerships between government and traditional leadership.
