Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, earned a total remuneration of about N442 million (approximately $324,000) for the 2025 financial year for his role as a non-executive director at MTN Group.
The amount represents an increase from the N412 million he received in the 2024 financial year. The rise in compensation is linked to improved earnings performance by the telecommunications company during the period.
As part of the compensation structure for non-executive directors, Sanusi II received approximately R1.82 million in annual retainer fees, which translates to around N148 million. In addition, he earned about R1.37 million, equivalent to roughly N112 million, for participating in board meetings throughout the year.
The remainder of the remuneration consisted of payments related to strategy sessions and special board assignments carried out during the financial year. These additional responsibilities are often assigned to directors who contribute to specific governance or advisory tasks within the company.
Within MTN Group’s governance structure, the Emir serves on several important board committees. His roles include membership on committees responsible for risk management oversight, financial supervision, and social and ethics governance.
Reports indicate that the disclosed remuneration strictly relates to Sanusi II’s corporate governance duties as a non-executive director. The amount does not include any shareholder dividends or investment income that he may receive independently through share ownership.
Muhammadu Sanusi II is widely known not only for his traditional leadership role in northern Nigeria but also for his background in finance, having previously served as governor of the country’s central bank before ascending to the Kano emirate.
