The Nadowli-Kaleo District celebrated Ghana Independence Day with a unique program that replaced the traditional school march-past with a colorful cultural exhibition and an academic awards ceremony.
The event was held under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope” and brought together students, teachers, community leaders, and residents for a day of culture, learning, and reflection. Instead of the usual parade, the celebration featured energetic Bawa dance performances, poetry recitals by students, and a live performance by local musician No Time, highlighting the district’s cultural heritage.
A major highlight of the event was the finals of the district’s first-ever Member of Parliament Quiz and Essay Competition, organized to promote academic excellence and address educational challenges in the area. Jang Circuit emerged as the team quiz champions, while Yahaya K.M. Ramadan from Loho RC Junior High School won both the Overall Best Essay and Overall Best Quiz awards.
During the event, the district’s legislator announced plans to deliver 3,000 mono-desks to schools and revealed that more than 20 school blocks are currently under construction across the district to improve learning conditions.
The celebration also saw a peaceful protest by members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association in the district, who wore red bands to express concern over delays in implementing their agreed conditions of service.
Nationally, the main Independence Day celebration took place at the forecourt of Jubilee House in Accra, where John Dramani Mahama delivered the keynote address marking Ghana’s 69th anniversary of independence.
