U.S. Embassy in Accra Warns World Cup Fans Against Visa Overstays

US world cup

The U.S. Embassy in Accra has issued a formal warning to Ghanaian football fans planning to travel to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, cautioning against overstaying their visas while in the United States.

The advisory, released on Friday, February 20, 2026, comes amid heightened demand for U.S. visas as supporters from Ghana prepare to attend matches of the global football tournament. While the embassy has opened tens of thousands of additional visa appointment slots to facilitate legitimate travel, officials stressed that strict immigration rules remain in force.

Visa Approval Does Not Guarantee Entry or Length of Stay

According to the embassy, holding a valid U.S. visa does not automatically guarantee entry into the country. Final admission decisions—and the length of stay—are made exclusively by officers of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the port of entry.

Although many travelers receive B1/B2 visitor visas that may allow stays of up to six months, the embassy emphasized that this period is not automatic. Visitors must leave the United States by the exact departure date stamped or recorded by the CBP officer upon arrival.

Serious Consequences for Overstaying

U.S. officials warned that overstaying an authorized period of stay is considered a serious immigration violation with potentially severe consequences. These may include:

  • Immediate deportation

  • Financial penalties

  • Long-term or permanent bans from re-entering the United States

The embassy stressed that even a short overstay can negatively affect future visa applications and travel eligibility.

World Cup Tickets Do Not Affect Immigration Decisions

The advisory also clarified that possession of a World Cup match ticket does not influence visa decisions or grant any special immigration privileges. Fans are required to meet the same immigration standards as all other visitors, regardless of event attendance.

Visa Validity Remains at Consular Discretion

While many Ghanaian applicants are issued five-year multiple-entry B1/B2 visas, the embassy noted that consular officers retain full discretion to limit the validity or duration of any visa based on individual circumstances.

Embassy Expands Visa Processing Capacity

To manage the expected surge in applications ahead of the World Cup, the embassy announced several measures aimed at easing access for legitimate travelers:

  • Expanded appointment availability: Tens of thousands of new B1/B2 visa interview slots have been released for 2026 travel.

  • FIFA PASS option: Fans holding official match tickets may qualify for the FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (PASS), which allows for expedited interview scheduling.

  • Passport validity requirements: Travelers must ensure their passports are valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay, meaning documents should be valid through early 2027 or later.

Apply Early and Avoid Fraud

Prospective travelers are strongly encouraged to apply well in advance through the official channels of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy Ghana visa platform.

The embassy also warned applicants to avoid so-called “visa fixers” or agencies that claim they can guarantee approval, noting that such claims are fraudulent and may result in financial loss or legal trouble.

A Clear Message to Fans

As excitement builds toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup, U.S. officials say compliance with immigration laws is essential to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.

The embassy reiterated that visitors who respect the terms of their visas protect not only their own future travel opportunities, but also the integrity of international travel between Ghana and the United States.
