In an effort to resolve ongoing tensions over delayed reimbursements, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced the commencement of payments for outstanding claims owed to private healthcare providers.
This move follows the Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG)’s decision to suspend services to NHIS cardholders, citing persistent delays in payments. The suspension, announced on April 4, 2025, raised alarm over possible disruptions in healthcare access for thousands of Ghanaians who depend on private facilities under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Responding to the situation, the NHIA issued a statement on April 5, 2025, reassuring both the public and healthcare providers that action is underway.
He reiterated the NHIA’s commitment to working with all service providers to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of the scheme.
The NHIA also issued an appeal to PHFAoG to lift the suspension, stressing the potential consequences for NHIS cardholders who may lose access to critical health services.
This development is part of a broader effort by the NHIA to strengthen collaboration between public and private sector healthcare providers. The authority emphasized that open dialogue and cooperation are key to ensuring the long-term success and effectiveness of the NHIS.
As payments are rolled out, stakeholders remain hopeful that this renewed commitment will help rebuild trust and ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare for all NHIS members nationwide.
