Organized labour calls off strike

The Public Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress is demanding the dissolution of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Board, citing its failure to serve the interests of Ghanaians.

This demand follows SSNIT’s controversial decision to sell 60% of its shares in four hotels to a private entity owned by a Minister of State, without consulting stakeholders.

Deputy General Secretary John Sampah expressed the union’s stance in an interview on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, emphasizing that the board’s actions have led to strike actions by Organized Labour.

“The board has failed to serve the interests of Ghanaians and should be dissolved,” Sampah said. “I support the fact that the SSNIT board should be dissolved… they need to be a listening board… They were not listening enough. In my candid view, it wasn’t listening management enough,” Sampah added, highlighting the board’s inability to heed public outcry and calls to rescind the decision.

The union is also demanding the immediate removal of top management, citing a lack of transparency and accountability in the controversial sale.

The Ghana Federation of Labour has joined the call, urging a complete overhaul of the SSNIT Board.
