Fifteen Members of Parliament from the Eastern Region have firmly defended their decision to endorse former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid, rejecting what they describe as “fabrications” by Abetifi MP, Bryan Acheampong.
At a press conference held recently, the MPs publicly declared their support for Dr. Bawumia. However, they allege that the former Agric Minister and his team have since mounted a misinformation campaign to undermine their endorsement.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the lawmakers accused Mr. Acheampong of deliberately fueling division within the party. They dismissed as “completely false” his claim that some MPs privately reached out to apologise after backing Dr. Bawumia.
“There is absolutely no truth in Hon. Bryan Acheampong’s assertion that some of us privately called him after our press conference to downplay our declaration. We challenge him, in the spirit of truth and accountability, to publicly name the MPs he alleges contacted him. Until then, his claim remains nothing but a fabrication,” the statement read.
The MPs further rejected suggestions that there had been text message exchanges between Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Acheampong over the matter, insisting no such communication occurred.
They also accused the Abetifi MP of attempting to create disunity at the grassroots by claiming that funds used during the 2024 elections came directly from his personal resources. According to them, the campaign was financed by party supporters and businessmen aligned with Dr. Bawumia, while Mr. Acheampong’s role was limited to coordination as Eastern Regional Campaign Coordinator.
“The false claim that he personally provided these amounts for the benefit of polling station executives is not only distasteful but also an attempt to create confusion in the party by falsely portraying officials as unaccountable,” the MPs said.
Reaffirming their backing of Dr. Bawumia, the lawmakers urged party members to disregard what they described as “deliberate falsehoods designed to hoodwink delegates.”
