“I have made no attempt to hide my determination to win over the people of the Volta Region to my political party, the NPP. That I have not yet succeeded does not mean I shall stop my efforts. I am convinced that the NPP should be the natural home for the people of the Volta Region, and this is based not just on ideological reasons, but also on historical ones too.”

These were the words of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, expressing his unwavering commitment to attract the people of the Volta Region to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in order to reverse the party’s electoral fortunes in the region.

During a grand durbar to celebrate the 2023 Hogbetsotso festival in Anloga, Volta Region, on November 4, 2023, President Akufo-Addo shared these words in response to the misrepresentation of some comments made during his visit to the flood-affected area in Mepe.

The President commended the Queenmother of Mepe, Mamaga Adzo Srako IV, for her defense of his comments and said, “I live in active hope that I will see the reversal of the fortunes of the NPP in the Volta Region in my lifetime.”

He cited historical, ideological reasons, and various development projects undertaken by successive NPP governments in the region as motivation for his efforts. President Akufo-Addo explained that “in 1960, Dr. JB Danquah stood on the ticket of the UP, the predecessor party of the NPP, to contest Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of the CPP for the presidency of the new Republic. In that election, Dr. Danquah won decisively here in Anlo and in Ho West, even though he lost in the country.”

The President emphasized his commitment to wooing the region to the NPP and said, “until that day comes when the Volta Region returns home to its proper political roots, I shall continue to try to woo it, and you must all, in the meantime, overlook the apparent controversies of a yet-to-be successful suitor.” He expressed hope to see the NPP perform well in the region’s polls.

He also praised Togbui Sri III for acknowledging the infrastructure developments brought by his government to the area and mentioned upcoming projects, such as the Agenda 111 hospital and TVET structures for skill training for young people. President Akufo-Addo highlighted the significant road infrastructure improvements in the Volta Region as well.

In conclusion, he encouraged everyone to protect their heritage, environment, and work together for a brighter and more sustainable future for future generations. He also commended the collaborative efforts of state agencies, the private sector, and individuals in dealing with the impact of floods in the region.
