Following the 2024 general elections, President Nana Akufo-Addo has issued a stern directive to security services, urging them to take a firm stand against any acts of violence that threaten the country’s peace and stability.
In his final Christmas address to the nation on December 24, President Akufo-Addo condemned the senseless violence that has marred an otherwise commendable democratic process. He emphasized that the pursuit of political power should always be centered around serving the people, not through coercion or violence.
“Our nation’s peace is sacred, and it will not be sacrificed on the altar of ambition,” President Akufo-Addo declared. “The Rule of Law will prevail, no matter the circumstances. I call on the security services to take a strong stance against any actions that jeopardize the stability and unity of our country.”
The President’s appeal comes amid rising tensions and disputes over election results in various regions, accompanied by reports of post-election disturbances, including vandalism targeting Electoral Commission offices and public properties. As of December 10, 110 individuals had been detained in connection with the unrest.
The President’s directive aims to ensure that those responsible for acts of violence are held accountable and to prevent further escalation. President Akufo-Addo also highlighted the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, stating, “Peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the ability to resolve conflicts through peaceful means.”
He urged Ghanaians to embrace this perspective as a guiding principle for the future.
The president’s message has been widely interpreted by the public as a reassuring gesture, as many across Ghana continue to monitor the post-election situation closely.
