Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), has expressed his belief that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is well-suited to join forces with John Mahama for the upcoming elections.

The official confirmation of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 general elections was announced by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the opposition party on Thursday. This marks her second consecutive term as the running mate, following her previous role in the 2020 elections.

Despite speculation surrounding other potential candidates, such as Julius Debrah, former Chief of Staff to ex-President Mahama; economist Dr. Nii Moi Thompson; Member of Parliament for Asunafo, Eric Opoku; and retired Police Commissioner, Nathan Kofi Boakye, Mr. Mahama opted to retain the former Education Minister.

In August of the previous year, Dr. Asah-Asante had already highlighted Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as a standout choice among potential running mates for Mr. Mahama. He described her as a valuable asset possessing extensive experience and the necessary skills to effectively partner with Mr. Mahama.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM, Dr. Asah-Asante commended the NDC for making an excellent selection. He stated, “I think that it is the best selection that can come from the NDC. The woman has very impeccable records. The woman is fit for purpose. She has what it takes to partner with John Mahama to deliver the ticket come December 7, 2024.”
