At the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council, a commotion broke out as residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the alleged killing of a 28-year-old man by police officers.

Abubakari Shahid, a young man, was allegedly killed on March 8 by some personnel from the anti-robbery unit of the Ghana Police Service, who accused him of being part of a robbery syndicate.

Despite the accusations against him, residents are convinced of the deceased’s innocence and are demanding that his name be cleared before he is laid to rest. On March 10, angry youth gathered at the forecourt of the Regional Coordinating Council to protest the criminalization of the deceased.

The Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Norgbey, stated in an interview with Citi News that the remaining 34 out of the 184 residents who were arrested by soldiers have been released. Although some families claimed that they had not yet been reunited with their loved ones as of March 9, the lawmaker expressed confidence that everyone should be able to reach home and reunite with their families now that the military has released the 34.

On March 7, a group of military personnel raided the Ashaiman municipality under the guise of searching for suspects in the murder of Trooper Imoro Sheriff, a military officer. During the operation, many residents were arrested and subjected to brutal treatment, and 184 were taken into custody.

After spending a day in military custody at Burma Camp, 150 of the detainees were released on March 9. The Military High Command had authorized the operation, which was aimed at apprehending criminals in the community, according to a statement from the Ghana Armed Forces. Military flights were observed flying over the affected areas while the soldiers carried out the operation.

The soldiers’ conduct has generated widespread criticism from various sources, including local and international human rights organizations. They have called for the personnel responsible to be investigated and punished, and for compensation to be paid to the victims.
