According to Russian state media, at least three individuals were injured when a Russian Sukhoi-34 supersonic warplane inadvertently fired a weapon into the city of Belgorod near Ukraine on Thursday night. Video footage captured scenes of destruction, including damaged cars, broken windows in buildings, and even a car flipped upside down on the roof of a store. The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, declared a state of emergency and reported a 20-meter (65-foot) crater on one of the main streets, with four cars and four apartment buildings sustaining damage. Thankfully, there were no reported fatalities, and an apartment building was evacuated overnight.

The Russian Defense Ministry, as cited by the news agency Tass, stated that the accidental discharge of aviation ammunition occurred as a Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bomber was flying over Belgorod. However, the type of weapon involved was not disclosed. The ministry also confirmed that an investigation was already underway, as some buildings were damaged. Notably, the Belgorod region has experienced previous explosions in locations such as fuel and ammunition stores, in the context of what Moscow refers to as its “special military operation” in Ukraine, which commenced on February 24, 2022.
