Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that six out of the ten sports stadia constructed by the government in the ten old regions are prepared for commissioning. During the launch of the 100-day countdown to the African Games Accra 2023 in Accra on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the government’s commitment to hosting the Games and enhancing sports development in Ghana through significant investments in these facilities.

Dr. Bawumia mentioned that the government has renovated key sports stadiums like the Accra Sports Stadium, Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, and Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi over the past seven years. Additionally, 10 sports stadia, one in each of the ten old regions, have been constructed. Six of these stadia in Wa, Dunkwa on Offin, Axim, Dormaa Ahenkro, Ho, and Koforidua are ready for commissioning. Dr. Bawumia announced that commissioning would commence with the Koforidua Sports Stadium before the end of the year, with the remaining four expected to be completed next year.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to sports infrastructure at the community level, Dr. Bawumia revealed the construction of 153 astro turfs in communities across the country, a significant increase from the three public astro turfs available when the government took office. He urged the Ministry of Youth and its stakeholders to prioritize the maintenance of these facilities, emphasizing the importance of preserving them.

The newly constructed sports stadia are designed to be multi-purpose, featuring international standard facilities such as football pitches, 8-lane athletics tracks, tennis courts, basketball courts, conference rooms, and IT and skills training centers for the youth.
