Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyabeng has revealed the reason behind former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s failure to appear before the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as scheduled on Monday, June 2.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Agyabeng disclosed that Ofori-Atta’s legal team had submitted a letter dated May 28, stating that their client had been diagnosed with cancer and is set to undergo surgery on June 13.
Despite this explanation, the Special Prosecutor made a surprising announcement—declaring Ken Ofori-Atta wanted once again.
Ofori-Atta’s lawyers had previously requested to participate in the ongoing investigation virtually, citing his health condition. They submitted medical documents and referred to provisions in the Electronic Transactions Act to support their request.
The former Finance Minister is currently under investigation in five separate cases involving significant national matters: petroleum and mineral revenue assurance, the termination of a contract with the Electricity Company of Ghana, the National Cathedral project, ambulance procurement, and the management of the GRA tax P-fund.
Although the OSP had scheduled his appearance for June 2, his legal team asked for a remote session in light of his health concerns.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Court is expected to rule on June 18 on a motion filed by Ofori-Atta. The motion seeks to restrain the OSP from re-declaring him wanted and to compel the removal of prior public notices from the office’s social media channels.
