Tensions are escalating in the Tema Metropolis as youth groups stormed the offices of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly in fierce protest against rumors that actress-turned-politician Ebi Bright is being considered for the position of Mayor.
The demonstrators, mainly concerned youth and residents of Tema East, voiced their anger with chants, drumming, and tyre burning, demanding that President John Dramani Mahama appoint a native of Tema to the role instead.
They insist that the rightful candidate is Patience Ankamah Addo, who, according to them, was actively involved in the selection process and has the backing of both the grassroots and traditional authorities.
“We came here with heavy hearts to express our disappointment,” said protest leader Dora Sappor. “We’re hearing that Ebi Bright is being brought in as Mayor of Tema, but she wasn’t even part of the process. Why should someone who wasn’t involved from the beginning be imposed on us? This is unacceptable.”
Sappor stressed that the protest had no political agenda but was rooted in the community’s call for transparency, fairness, and respect for due process.
“This is the united demand of the youth of Tema East and our traditional leaders,” she added.
The demonstration follows swirling speculation that Ebi Bright, a prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is under consideration for the mayoral position despite not being part of the initial consultation efforts.
There has been no official announcement from the presidency or the NDC leadership regarding the appointment. However, the protesters made it clear that any decision perceived as an external imposition would be met with firm opposition.
Traditional leaders in the area have also reportedly raised concerns and are expected to engage with party executives and government officials in hopes of defusing tensions.
Although the protest was largely peaceful, the burning of tyres caused brief traffic disruptions near the Assembly premises. Police officers were present to maintain order and prevent any escalation.
