Wontumi Released from EOCO Custody After Bail Motion Withdrawn

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—widely known as Chairman Wontumi—has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

His release followed the withdrawal of a legal motion seeking a review of his GH¢50 million bail conditions. The motion, initially filed at the High Court in Accra on May 30, 2025, was set to be heard on Tuesday, June 3. However, his legal team withdrew it a day earlier, on Monday, June 2, clearing the way for his release.

Chairman Wontumi had been granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, with two justified sureties. His legal team, led by lawyer and Member of Parliament Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the bail conditions were satisfied by Friday, May 30. Despite this, his release was delayed due to the pending motion—filed, his lawyers claim, without his explicit authorization.

NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong confirmed the news to journalists gathered outside EOCO headquarters on Monday evening.

“I can confirm that Chairman Wontumi has been released and is home resting. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments. Let’s also thank Hon. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, for his support,” Kodua stated.

Wontumi’s detention had sparked political tensions. On May 29, Minority MPs staged a walkout from Parliament and protested outside EOCO, demanding his immediate release. They argued that, given his public status and low flight risk, he should have been granted bail on self-recognition.

The protests extended beyond Parliament, with NPP supporters blocking the road in front of EOCO offices, disrupting traffic as a show of solidarity.
