FIFA Defies Geopolitical Tensions: Infantino Confirms Iran Will Play World Cup Matches in the U.S.

76th Fifa

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will play its matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States as originally planned, putting an end to speculation about a possible relocation. Speaking at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver on April 30, 2026, Infantino dismissed concerns and emphasized football’s role in uniting nations, stating that there is no alternative plan for Iran’s fixtures.

The decision comes after a period of uncertainty triggered by regional tensions and a request from the Iranian Football Federation to move its group-stage matches to Mexico over safety concerns. Despite these developments, and the absence of Iran’s delegation at the Congress following a visa-related issue involving one of its representatives, Infantino maintained that the tournament would proceed as scheduled and continue to serve as a platform for global unity.

Iran has been drawn into Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. The team will be based in Tucson, Arizona, during the tournament. Their opening match will be against New Zealand on June 15, 2026, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, followed by a clash with Belgium on June 21 at the same venue. Iran will then face Egypt on June 26 at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington.

The confirmation also comes amid political and security considerations surrounding Iran’s participation. U.S. President Donald Trump indicated his support for FIFA’s decision, saying he would defer to Infantino’s judgment. However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that visa restrictions could apply to certain Iranian officials, particularly those with links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while broader travel limitations may also affect some fans.

Despite these challenges, Iranian authorities have stated that the national team is fully prepared for the tournament, with logistical arrangements already completed by the country’s Ministry of Sports and Youth. The situation highlights the complex intersection of sports and geopolitics, even as FIFA pushes forward with its message of unity through football.
