In the year 2023, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) recorded a total of 8,960 new births and 5,464 deaths.

Out of the 8,960 registered new-borns, 4,541 were males, and 4,419 were females. Data further revealed that during the first, second, third, and fourth quarters, 2,207, 2,016, 2,112, and 2,625 children under one (1) year were registered, respectively.

Mr. Ludwig Mawuli Agbezuhlor, the Head of Birth and Death registry at the AMA, disclosed this information on January 19, 2024. He noted that the number of registrations surpassed the expected target of 4,181 births and 935 deaths. This achievement was attributed to the consistent efforts of AMA’s Births and Deaths Registry officers who regularly visited hospitals, clinics, maternity homes, delivery and weighing centers across the eight registries within the Metropolis, namely Korle Gonno, Mamprobi, Bubuashie, Kaneshie, Usher Town, Adjabeng, Chorkor, and Korle Bu.

Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, emphasized the significance of this data for urban planning, healthcare provision, and allocation of educational resources. He encouraged residents to promptly register births and deaths of their relatives, highlighting that the data provided insights into demographic trends and population growth within the metropolis.

Ankrah commended the Births and Deaths Registry of the AMA for their successful sensitization campaigns and mass birth registration exercise conducted the previous year, particularly for children below one year, contributing to the increase in the number of registrations. The Births and Deaths Registry operates under the Births and Deaths Act, 2020 (Act 1027), mandated to register and certify births, deaths, and foetal deaths for national development and related issues.
