Augustine Akor, a 21-year-old man, is currently held by Nigeria’s Enugu State Police Command on allegations of raping and murdering a 16-year-old girl believed to be his relative. He was apprehended on Monday, June 12, 2023, after reportedly ambushing the deceased, Faith Akuji, who her grandfather sent to grind cassava at the community center. With the help of the local security watch, law enforcement officers apprehended Akor in the Igbo-Eze North Division.
The Enugu Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the suspect’s arrest. According to Ndukwe, Akor allegedly raped the victim on Thursday, June 8, and to cover up the crime, he strangled her in a bush at Mpole-Ubere in the Ette community until she succumbed to death.
On the evening of June 8, the teenager went missing after running an errand for her grandfather, and despite efforts to locate her, she remained unaccounted for. However, following the suspect’s arrest, her decomposing body was discovered in the bush. Akor confessed to dragging her into the bush, forcefully engaging in sexual activity until she lost consciousness and died. The victim found unclothed below the waist, was taken to a hospital where doctors on duty confirmed her death.
The Homicide Section of Enugu State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department is conducting further investigations. Augustine Akor is expected to face charges after the investigation is concluded.
