Felix Afena-Gyan, a forward for US Cremonese, has declined an invitation to play for Ghana’s U23 football team, the Black Meteors, in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria. Head coach Ibrahim Tanko called Afena-Gyan to help secure a spot in the main tournament, along with seven other foreign-based players.
Despite the Ghana Football Association sending all necessary travel arrangements to his Italian club, Afena-Gyan has yet to join his teammates in Accra for the match.
The young player has not participated in any national team assignment since appearing in an international friendly against Brazil before the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Afena-Gyan has only started five Serie A games this season, scoring two goals in three Coppa Italia appearances.
