Ghanaian music groups owe Ghanaians one last hit

SONG

The Ghanaian music scene has undoubtedly made significant progress, with musicians now achieving success not only on local music charts but also on international platforms. These talented artists have graced our screens with solo albums and singles, while others have formed duos either by blood ties, agreement, friendship, or shared dreams.

It is undeniable that the Ghanaian music scene has produced remarkable music duos that have played a crucial role in transforming and evolving the industry over the past three decades. These duos have delivered exceptional music that has shaped the landscape of Ghanaian music. As Ghanaians eagerly expect new hit singles and albums from these duos, let’s look at the five greatest duos that have left an indelible mark on the music scene:

VIP/VVIP
VIP, now known as VVIP (Vision In Progress), is a Ghanaian Hiplife music group consisting of Zeal (formerly Lazzy), Prodigal, and Reggie Rockstone. The group rose to prominence with their 2003 album “Ahomka Womu,” with the title track dominating the Ghanaian charts for over 20 weeks. Their success led to international recognition, and they have since gained fame as one of Ghana’s most renowned artists.

R2BEES
R2Bees is a dynamic hip-hop and hiplife duo hailing from Tema, composed of Faisal Hakeem (Paedae da Pralem/Omar Sterling) and Rashid Mugeez (Mugeez). They garnered attention with their debut single “Yawa Gal” in August 2008, which became an instant hit. Their chart-topping track “I Dey Mad,” featuring Unda Melodies, dominated Ghanaian Radio Music Charts for weeks. R2Bees has made its mark in the music industry, earning nominations at the 2013 BET Awards and releasing its third studio album, “Site 15,” in March 2019.

4×4
4×4 is a Ghanaian hip-hop musical group formed in 2000 by Captain Planet and Coded (formerly Abortion) with the assistance of Ronnie Coches and Bright Bling Sparkles (Buk Bak). The group is credited with introducing Crunk to Ghana and gained recognition with their album “Contestant No. 1” in 2007. Their single “HotGirls.com,” featuring Fresh Prince, achieved success and earned them a Ghana Music Award nomination in 2008. With the release of their album “World Trade Center” in 2009, which went platinum, 4×4 topped the singles chart in Ghana with the title track and achieved success with the single “Waist and Power.”

BRΛDEZ
BRΛDEZ is a rap duo comprising blood brothers Kunta Kinta and Flowking Stone. With the support of their elder brother, Okyeame Kwame, who occasionally featured in their songs, they made a strong impact on the Ghanaian hip-hop scene. Their participation in and victories at various rap competitions helped build their confidence. BRΛDEZ’s music defies easy categorization but can be described as rap with deep poetic lyrics. Their exceptional writing ability allows them to synchronize their music with rhythms that highlight their lyrics, often incorporating various African melodies and tunes. They are one of the most talented rappers in Africa, and their achievements include winning the Ghana Music Award for “Most Popular Song of the Year” in 2009 with “Simple” and the Museke Online Award for “West African Song of the Year” in 2009 with the same track.

PRAYE
Regarding the term “Praye,” which translates from Akan to English as “broom,” it undoubtedly captivated Ghanaians during the 90s and 2000s. Eventually, they secured victory in the Nescafe Africa Revelation, Ghana Edition, held in 2004. The trio continued to release chart-topping music until Cartel Big Jay and Eugene announced their fellow member, Praye Tintin, had departed from their collective. A few years later, Eugene, one of the two remaining members, tied the knot with actress Beverly Afaglo. Unfortunately, their group disbanded less than a year after Eugene’s marriage to the actress.’
