Today, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated Phase Three of the Five Districts Water Supply Project in Adaklu, Volta Region. This project was initiated in September 2020. The total cost of €11.5 million was financed through a concessionary facility from Raiffeisen Bank International AG of Austria. It aims to benefit approximately 89,150 people residing in 95 communities in Central Tongu, Adaklu, and Agotime-Ziope.
During his address at Adaklu, President Akufo-Addo highlighted key aspects of the project. These include the construction of three concrete tanks at Adaklu Kpeleho, Adaklu Sofa, and Adaklu Kpatove to ensure the safety of the water from bacteria. A water booster station at Adaklu Kpeleho was also completed to facilitate transportation to Adaklu and Agotime-Ziope communities. 175 kilometers of water pipelines were laid. The design for Phase IV of the project is currently underway. The President emphasized the government’s commitment to providing all regions nationwide with good, safe, affordable, and reliable water services.
President Akufo-Addo also expressed the government’s dedication to achieving safe sanitation and hygiene practices by 2030, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. He outlined a multi-faceted approach, focusing on governance and institutional strengthening within the sector, to accelerate fair access to Ghana’s WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services.
The President noted significant progress in the government’s efforts to provide clean water and sanitation. He cited to speed up the commissioning, in September 2020, of completed projects under the Water Supply Improvement Project of the Ghana-Spain Debt Swap Development.
Implemented by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), these projects cost US$3.78 million and benefited a population of 75,000. 36 rural and small towns/communities in Ho, Ho West, Agotime-Ziope, and South Dayi districts were targeted for the projects.36 rural and small towns/communities in Ho, Ho West, Agotime-Ziope, and South Dayi districts were targeted for the projects. The remaining works are expected to be completed by March of the following year.
President Akufo-Addo mentioned the commissioning of Cluster Water Systems at Bontrase and Amasamkrom in the Central Region on June 30th, 2020. These systems were part of the Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project (SRWSP), which aimed to improve water access in 11 out of the 16 regions of the country. The project was financed by a US$47.5 million credit facility from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank.
