Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has expressed disappointment in the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit former Deputy Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson and two others in the ambulance purchase case. He has vowed to appeal the ruling.
Godfred Yeboah Dame described the Court of Appeal’s decision as “perverse and grossly unfair to the nation.” He criticized the ruling as “inimical to the fight against impunity and abuse in public office” and stated that the Office of the Attorney-General will “promptly file an appeal to erase the effect of this erroneous decision.”
The A-G’s office argued that the evidence presented in court showed that the accused committed a crime by importing vehicles, purported to be ambulances, into the country in violation of a contract. According to a statement from the A-G’s office, “The relevant facts of the matter, as borne out by the undisputed evidence led so far, show that vehicles purporting to be ambulances were imported into the country in December 2014 in violation of the contract governing the transaction.”
The A-G’s office also cited a report from authorized Mercedes Benz dealers, which stated that the vehicles could never be converted into ambulances.
“We will not let this decision stand; we will appeal and ensure that justice is served,” Dame added.
