A Nigerian arrested for spending money mistakenly sent into his account

The Kwara Police Command arrested Alfa Rafiu, a Nigerian on April 17, 2023, for excessive spending, instead of informing a commercial bank about an accidental credit of ₦‎280 million to his account. As per sources familiar with the case, Rafiu, a resident of the Akuji compound in the Abayawo area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, purchased houses and cars and even sponsored people for lesser Hajj instead of notifying the bank of the erroneous transaction.

Although he had been generous to some individuals in his community as a point of sale (POS) operator, his sudden wealth raised suspicions among some residents. However, his luck ran out when the bank identified the error and lodged a complaint with the police, resulting in his arrest. SP Ajayi Okasanmi, PRO of Kwara State, confirmed the suspect’s detention, stating that the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department located in Alagbon-Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, carried it out.
