According to newly declassified intelligence released by the White House, over 20,000 Russian combatants died in the battle for Bakhmut in five months, and 80,000 others were wounded. About half of the deaths are attributed to the Wagner private mercenary company. According to the US, half of the dead Russian soldiers are from the Wagner Company. This toll accounts for losses since the start of December. Russian commanders have struggled to deliver positive news to the Kremlin since Bakhmut has little strategic value.
While Ukrainian officials have said they are trying to kill as many Russian troops as possible and wear down its reserves, Ukraine only now controls a small portion of the city. The BBC cannot independently verify the figures given, and Moscow has not commented.
