Black Stars coach Otto Addo has acknowledged the team’s defensive challenges and vowed to address individual tactical improvements ahead of Thursday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group E qualifier.
During a press conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Coach Addo admitted that the defenders have struggled with positioning and spatial awareness on the field.
“We have issues with that… it’s more about positioning, recognizing when the ball is open, not being too close to your opponent, stepping back, covering space, and maintaining about four or five meters distance from the striker,” he explained.
He stressed the importance of proper body positioning, adding, “If you’re sideways, you can move quickly in both directions, but if you’re flat-footed, you have to turn first, which slows you down.”
Despite these challenges, Coach Addo expressed confidence that the team is making progress. “I’m convinced that this won’t happen again,” he stated.
With the AFCON qualifier approaching on Thursday, Coach Addo’s tactical adjustments will be closely observed as the Black Stars prepare for their crucial match.
