Parliament has approved the Affirmative Action, Gender Equity Bill 2024, clearing the way for its implementation as a measure to address gender imbalances in the country.

Now known as the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Act, the legislation aims to promote gender equity in both the public and private sectors, addressing historical discrimination against women and deeply rooted patriarchal socio-cultural systems.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin announced the bill’s passage on Tuesday, stating, “Honourable members, the ‘ayes’ have it. The Affirmative Action Gender Equality Bill 2024, now the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Act, has been duly read the third time and passed.”

The bill’s passage marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of gender equality in Ghana.
