The inaugural African Open Powerlifting Championship, scheduled for July 29, 2023, in Accra, will feature the most exceptional powerlifters from Africa competing for prestigious titles.

Powerlifters from various weight categories will gather in the capital city of Accra, Ghana, vying for recognition as the continent’s strongest athletes.

Besides medals and certificates, the winners of the competition will be awarded a cash prize exceeding $2000.
Van Calebs, the lead organizer of the championship, expressed his excitement about this groundbreaking event, emphasizing that it will be the first of its kind in Africa. He highlighted the competition’s goal of providing African powerlifters with the opportunity to compete against athletes from other countries, thus enhancing their skills in the sport.
“Our aim is to elevate the sport of powerlifting to new heights. I firmly believe it holds immense potential for our country, and it is our responsibility as individuals like myself to take the initiative and introduce programs that foster its development,” he stated.

Calebs also appealed to corporate agencies to support and contribute to the growth of the sport, expressing confidence that the championship will be a remarkable event.
He emphasized that the competition is open to all bodybuilders, irrespective of their affiliation with other competition bodies.

The upcoming championship will include intense battles in events such as squats, bench presses, and deadlifts. The competitions will be overseen by experienced African umpires, ensuring fairness and adherence to the sport’s rules and regulations.
