Presidential aspirant Alan Kyerematen has unveiled an ambitious plan to reform Ghana’s Free SHS program, focusing on its long-term sustainability and creating structured pathways to help graduates transition into tertiary education or the job market.
Speaking during the Presidential Encounters 2024 hosted by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on November 22, 2024, Mr. Kyerematen highlighted the importance of a comprehensive review of the policy to maximize its impact.
“The Free SHS program is a remarkable policy, and I doubt any government would discontinue it,” he stated. However, he expressed concerns over its current design, which he said fails to address the critical question: ‘What happens after Free SHS?’ According to Mr. Kyerematen, offering free education without clear post-graduation opportunities diminishes the program’s transformative potential.
