President Akufo-Addo has expressed his confidence in Justice Torkornoo’s qualifications and fitness to serve as Chief Justice in his letter to the Council of State, noting her 19 years of experience in the judiciary, including her tenure of four years on the Supreme Court. If approved by Parliament, Justice Torkornoo will make history as the third female Chief Justice in Ghana. after Justice Georgina Theodora Wood and Justice Sophia Akuffo.
Her appointment will be President Akufo-Addo’s third since taking office in January 2017. Justice Torkornoo’s nomination is currently awaiting approval by Parliament, and she will replace Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, who is retiring on May 24, 2023, upon reaching 70 years.
Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, born on September 11, 1962, is a Ghanaian judge who serves on the bench in Ghana since 2004. She was appointed to the Supreme Court in November 2019 after receiving parliamentary approval in December 2019 and was sworn in on December 17, 2019. Justice Torkornoo has a rich judicial background, having served as on the Commercial Division of the High Court and actively participating in the judiciary and judicial service reform agenda in Ghana from 2005.
Justice Torkornoo, before her elevation to the Court of Appeal, worked as a High Court Judge. Her nomination to the Supreme Court in November 2019 further underscores her esteemed legal career.
