Albert Kan Dapaah, the Minister of National Security, has filed a lawsuit against Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the organizer of the #FixTheCountry Movement. The lawsuit stems from allegations made by Barker-Vormawor, claiming that National Security and other government officials attempted to induce his silence in 2021.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor found himself in legal trouble when he and others were released by the police on September 22, 2023. They had been arrested for organizing the #OccupyJorlorlobiHouse protest in Accra, which violated a restraining order issued by the police.
Barker-Vormawor alleges that in 2021, representatives of National Security and government officials approached him and offered financial incentives in an attempt to silence his activism. He contends that he was offered $1 million along with promises of lucrative government positions, all aimed at curbing his activities that were critical of the Akufo-Addo administration.
Court documents available to Metro TV reveal that the National Security Minister is seeking legal recourse to establish that Barker-Vormawor’s statements are defamatory. Additionally, he is requesting the court to award him “Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GHC10,000,000.00) as General Damages, including Aggravated and/or Exemplary Damages for Defamation related to the statements made by the Defendant.”
Furthermore, Mr. Kan Dapaah is also seeking an apology and a retraction of the allegedly defamatory comments. He is additionally seeking a perpetual injunction that would prevent Barker-Vormawor from making similar or other defamatory statements against him in the future.
