Residents of Asonomaso in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region are urging the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to install a chief in their town to address growing concerns over crime and development.

The community has been without a chief for six years following the destoolment of their previous leader. Residents say the absence of traditional leadership has led to an increase in criminal activity, drug abuse, and violence.

Assembly members I.K. Badu and Osei Kwadwo expressed concern that the community’s reputation has suffered, with Asonomaso becoming synonymous with crime and violence.

“The stigma of violence attached to Asonomaso community is affecting all concerned individuals,” they said. “We urgently need a substantive chief and sub-chiefs to steer the affairs of this great community.”

Comparing Asonomaso to neighboring communities, residents feel they lag behind in terms of development and infrastructure. While Assembly members have provided some leadership, they acknowledge it is not enough, leaving women and young people apprehensive about their future.

Residents are appealing to the Asantehene to resolve the chieftaincy dispute and install a new chief to facilitate development and address the growing concerns.
