Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has cautioned that recent events in Kenya should serve as a wake-up call to Ghanaian leaders, especially as the country gears up for a crucial election on December 7.
Bagbin highlighted that the situation in Kenya bears similarities to Ghana’s and urged leaders, including Members of Parliament, to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections. He mentioned reaching out to key stakeholders, including the chairpersons of the Electoral Commission and the National Commission for Civic Education, traditional authorities, and the Chief Justice. He also plans to engage with President Akufo-Addo to help secure a violence-free electoral process.
During a session with journalists in Kumasi, Bagbin stressed the importance of taking preemptive measures to protect Ghana’s democracy ahead of the 2024 elections. He noted, “People sometimes take many things for granted, including my colleagues in Parliament, but we all can witness what happened in Kenya and now in Tanzania. It could happen in Ghana, although I’m not saying it will.”

Bagbin emphasized that Ghana is not different from its East African counterparts and must act to prevent similar unrest. He assured, “We must do everything to ensure that the rightful leader chosen by Ghanaians leads the country. In this matter, I will make every effort to ensure that my actions are not perceived as partisan.”
