Bagbin’s decision causing chaos

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to adjourn Parliament indefinitely, describing it as “supervising chaos” and a threat to Ghana’s democratic processes.

Afenyo-Markin expressed frustration with the circumstances leading to the November 7 adjournment, which Bagbin called due to the absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members, leaving the House without business to discuss. He explained that the NPP caucus’s absence was due to a procedural issue, not negligence, citing the Clerk of Parliament’s failure to print the Order Paper—a document detailing agenda items for parliamentary discussion.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the absence of the Order Paper was a significant reason the NPP could not participate in proceedings, as its non-printing stalled the session. This, he argued, was misinterpreted as a lack of commitment on the NPP’s part.

He underscored that the adjournment resulted from an administrative oversight, not NPP irresponsibility, and emphasized that responsibility for the disrupted session should lie with the administrative error, not the NPP caucus.
