During his address at Harvard University’s Africa Development Conference, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emphasized the need for Africa to abandon the mindset of impossibility and embrace a mindset of possibility to achieve economic growth and development. He identified the reliance on ineffective systems in Africa as a hindrance to progress and highlighted issues such as over-reliance on raw materials, lack of effective systems, financial exclusion, and manual delivery of public services as factors contributing to Africa’s stunted progress.

Dr. Bawumia urged Africa to embrace the 4th Industrial Revolution and address these system challenges, while also emphasizing the need to break free from the mindset of impossibility. He acknowledged that the legacy of 500 years of slavery and colonialism had left a lingering mindset of limitations in Africa. Still, it is time for the continent to believe in itself and adopt an attitude of possibility.

Dr. Bawumia cited his experiences in Ghana, where he spearheaded successful digitalization efforts to address system challenges. He also faced resistance from pessimists who needed to be convinced of the feasibility of implementing such innovations. He called on Africa’s youth to be masters of their destiny, chart their path, and develop on their own terms, emphasizing that it is indeed possible.

The Harvard Africa Development Conference is a platform that brings together high-level participants to discuss issues related to the development of the African continent.
