
Two police officers sustained injuries on Wednesday when a special anti-galamsey task force came under attack at Bonteso in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.
The team had visited the community to clamp down on illegal mining operations but was confronted by a group of residents, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. The incident left ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil and G/Sgt. Agblekpe Mawuena Yao with injuries to the head, mouth, and leg.
According to police, the clash erupted around 11:30 a.m. when the task force, during a routine patrol, spotted an excavator in operation at a mining pit, causing extensive environmental damage.
Four individuals, including the local assembly member, Patrick Asare, have been arrested. The others are identified as Akwesi Amponsah, Osei Vasco, and Owusu Alexander.
The operation, led by DSP Karim Mahama and ASP Abdul Jalil, confirmed that the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
