British Airways allegedly charges Ghanaians $50 for ‘illegal’ tickets, according to the Consumer Protection Agency

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has accused the British Airways airline of imposing an additional $50 fee on Ghanaians purchasing airline tickets. The CPA strongly criticized British Airways in a statement, asserting the extra fee is unlawful and demanding an immediate halt to its implementation.

In their statement, the CPA highlighted an illicit practice by British Airways concerning paying airline tickets with cash at Standard Chartered Bank. According to the CPA, both British Airways and Standard Chartered Bank have jointly imposed a $50 charge for settling ticket payments at their branches, an act deemed illegal. The CPA emphasized their call for British Airways to discontinue this practice promptly.

The CPA alleged this charge resulted from an agreement between the airline and Standard Chartered Bank. However, they emphasized passengers should not be entangled in any agreement between the two entities. They argued that if British Airways and Standard Chartered Bank had agreed, passengers should not be subjected to additional fees beyond the ticket fare.

Based on their investigation, the CPA attributed the responsibility for this outrageous $50 charge to British Airways, stating that the airline instructed Standard Chartered Bank to impose it on top of the ticket price.

The CPA encouraged affected individuals subject to this alleged extra charge to report the incident to the agency, as they may be eligible for a refund.

“If anyone has made payment of this additional $50 to Standard Chartered Bank, we urge them to promptly contact the CPA for assistance in obtaining a refund.”
