After being caught on film walking without aid equipment, a British Ghanaian ex-soldier, Lance Corporal Michael Mantey, was ordered by a British court to pay back £70,000. Mantey had initially sued the UK Ministry of Defense for £1.6 million after suffering a foot injury while deployed in Estonia.
Mantey claimed that he had lost mobility due to the injury and had to wear multiple layers of clothing to see his physician. However, he dropped the case after being secretly filmed by investigators from the Ministry of Defense walking without a stick and an open-toe shoe.
The investigators found Mantey had recovered from trench foot but had lied about his condition to claim compensation from the government. As a result, he now faces a lawsuit from his former employers for falsehood and has incurred £70,000 in legal representation bills. The British High Court, presided over by Judge Mr. Justice Eyre, deemed Mantey’s claim “dishonest,” stating that he had deliberately reported false symptoms to enhance the value of his claim for financial gain. The court found that Mantey had dishonestly portrayed himself as having a more severe injury than he did, which substantially affected the presentation of his case and led to significant inflation in the claim’s value.
Despite the court’s ruling, Mantey insisted he had suffered damage to his mobility but had responded well to treatment and had improved his movement. He expressed frustration that people couldn’t see the pain he went through every day and insisted his injuries would stay with him forever.
