The Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has strongly asserted that the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly known as the Anti-Gay Bill, is not only poorly conceived but also unconstitutional, and it does not serve the best interests of the country.
The Center’s response, communicated through a press release on the bill’s passage on Wednesday, February 28, emphasized that enacting the bill into law would be a significant setback for Ghana and its reputation as a democratic society. Despite numerous attempts to engage in a rational debate within Parliament, such efforts proved futile due to the widespread hysteria and fervent support mobilized for the bill.
The press release underscored that Ghana’s democracy is not a simple majoritarian system, where the majority can impose their will or biases on a minority solely based on numerical superiority. Instead, Ghana operates under a constitutional democracy, where even a majority, regardless of size or intensity, is bound by restrictions regarding what it can or cannot do in the name of the law. Crucially, the constitution safeguards minorities against oppression by the majority.
In summary, the CDD-Ghana remains steadfast in opposing the bill outside of Parliament, highlighting the importance of upholding democratic principles and protecting the rights of all citizens.
