K. T. Hammond, the Minister of Trade and Industry, has directed the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee (CMDC) to instruct Ghanaian cement manufacturers to immediately halt the increase in cement prices.
The Minister also requested that all cement producers in the country publish their retail prices to curb the ongoing arbitrary price hikes. He reiterated this directive to the CMDC at its inception on March 8, 2024.
Additionally, he emphasized his demand for the CMDC to work with cement producers to ensure consistent cement prices nationwide by implementing a unified pricing system similar to the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF) established by Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority for fuel retail.
The CMDC, chaired by Professor Alex Dodoo, Director General of the Ghana Standards Authority, was established under the Ghana Standards Authority (Manufacture of Cement) Regulations, 2023 (LI 2480).
The committee comprises members from the Ghanaian Institution of Engineers, the Association of Ghana Industries, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
