The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025, for questioning.

His appearance follows an aborted attempt by a joint team of National Security and police personnel to arrest him at his private residence in Kumasi on Friday, May 23. Dramatic footage of the operation, now widely circulated on social media, shows heavily armed officers surrounding his home—an incident that has provoked public concern and drawn sharp reactions from his supporters.

Chairman Wontumi arrived at the CID in the company of a high-profile legal team, which included former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame and former Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi. Their involvement underscores the gravity of the situation and suggests that the matter could carry significant legal and political consequences.

Although the Ghana Police Service has not issued an official statement detailing the reasons for Wontumi’s summons, sources indicate that the investigation may be linked to recent political developments and alleged infractions involving prominent party figures. The atmosphere at the CID headquarters was tense, with media personnel and party loyalists gathered in large numbers, awaiting further information.

Wontumi’s legal team is expected to brief the press following the meeting with investigators. Many within the NPP and beyond view the events of the past few days as part of a politically motivated effort to silence influential voices within the party ahead of the 2024 general elections.

As the situation unfolds, it continues to attract national attention, with calls for transparency and due process growing louder across political and civil society circles.
