The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has called upon the Ankobeahene of the Begoro Stool, Bafour Owiredu Agyarko Minta II, following allegations that he endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming December elections. This summons was prompted by a petition against him submitted by Daasebre Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, Otweresohene/Odau, and Okyeame Owusu, accusing Nana Owiredu Agyarko of engaging in partisan politics.
According to the petitioners, Bafour Owiredu Agyarko Minta II tarnished the reputation of the Begoro Stool by participating in partisan politics during the recent campaign tour of the Eastern Region by the former President. The petition further claimed that the Ankobeahene, representing the Nananom and the people of Begoro, endorsed Mahama during his interaction with traditional leadership on the campaign trail.
The petition detailed that the chief asserted that Nananom had invoked the gods by pouring libation against the “breaking the 8” mantra of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. He allegedly cautioned the people of Begoro to stay vigilant against the purported vote-rigging agenda of the current government.
Confirming the summons, Abuakwa Traditional State Secretary Dan Marfo Ofori Attah stated that the petitioners are seeking various remedies, including a destoolment order, nullification of the respondent’s conduct, a public retraction of the alleged comments, an unreserved apology to the petitioners and the people of Begoro, and customary sanctions if found guilty.
The hearing, initially scheduled for February 12, 2024, has been rescheduled to February 19, 2024.
