The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has extended its congratulations to President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang on their election. At the same time, the Commission has reminded public officers of their duty to uphold integrity and transparency in their official roles.

CHRAJ underscored that public office is a position of trust, creating a fiduciary relationship between public officers and citizens. As such, public officers are expected to demonstrate integrity and prioritize the public interest in the execution of their duties.

The Commission highlighted the importance of adhering to the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, which stipulates that public officers must avoid situations where their personal interests conflict or are likely to conflict with their official responsibilities, as outlined in Article 284 of the 1992 Constitution.

Furthermore, CHRAJ emphasized the constitutional requirement for public officers to declare their assets and liabilities, as mandated by Article 286(1). The Commission urged all public officers to take prompt action in acquainting themselves with the Code of Conduct and ensuring compliance with asset declaration requirements before assuming office.

In addition, CHRAJ called on the government to expedite the passage of the Conduct of Public Officers Bill to further strengthen accountability mechanisms.

The Commission also reminded public institutions of their responsibility to ensure that their decisions and actions are lawful and consistent with principles of administrative justice, which should serve as a cornerstone of the Ghanaian administrative framework.

Concluding its statement, CHRAJ Commissioner Dr. Joseph Whittal urged public officers to recommit themselves to their oaths of office and the constitutional principles of human rights, social justice, transparency, probity, and accountability as the nation embarks on a new year.
