Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has provided insight into the decision to expedite the injunction application filed by MP Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor of South Dayi, aimed at halting Parliament’s confirmation of newly nominated ministers by President Akufo Addo.
Justice Torkonoo emphasized that all necessary procedures had been completed, making the case ready for hearing.
Speaking to reporters in Accra on Thursday, the Chief Justice unveiled new measures to prioritize cases that have undergone required processes for prompt hearing within designated timelines.
“In this specific case, once the case was filed, the Attorney General submitted his response promptly. He filed his opposing affidavit. Therefore, the case was ready for hearing,” she explained.
She clarified that given the impending Easter break and the Attorney General’s assertion of the matter’s governance significance, the court was requested to issue a hearing notice for prompt adjudication. Consequently, hearing notices were issued, ensuring the presence of all concerned parties in court.
“The bailiff served all parties with hearing notices, and when the court convened on Wednesday, the case was listed for hearing as all parties had been duly served, and responses had been filed,” she elaborated.
Moreover, she elaborated on the implementation of a shift system in certain courts to alleviate the workload on judges.
The Supreme Court previously dismissed an application filed by MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, challenging the approval of new ministerial and deputy ministerial nominees. The court ruled the application as frivolous and an abuse of the judicial process, stating its lack of direct relevance to the nominees under consideration in Parliament.
