A coalition of religious and traditional groups has petitioned Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to expedite the hearing of two cases concerning the Pro-Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.

The petition, submitted on October 8, 2024, calls on the Chief Justice to schedule hearings for the two cases within the next two weeks.

The groups, including the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, Advocates for Christ Ghana, and various Christian and Muslim organizations, expressed concerns that delays in hearing the cases could hinder the bill’s passage this year, leading to significant financial costs for both citizens and the state.

“As over ninety percent of Ghanaians want our religious, cultural, and social norms upheld, and our children protected from Western neo-colonial ideologies and LGBTQI practices, we urge you to take swift action,” the petition stated.

The petitioners pointed to the Supreme Court’s commitment to an “early trial” and referenced comments from the Attorney General, who indicated that one month is a “reasonable” timeframe to resolve pending cases, stressing the importance of swift legal proceedings.
