The ad-hoc Parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tape concerning a plot by senior police officers to remove the Inspector-General of Police has accused two of the officers who testified before it of perjury.

According to the committee’s report presented to Parliament, Superintendent George Lysander Asare and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi were found to have lied during their testimony.

“Supt. Gyebi, during his sworn testimony on August 31, 2023, denied ever speaking directly to Chief Bugri Naabu on the phone or on Superintendent Asare’s phone. However, during his subsequent appearance before the Committee on October 10, 2023, he changed his statement and admitted to having spoken to Chief Bugri Naabu on the phone.”

The report further stated, “Supt. Asare also initially denied, under oath, being present when Chief Bugri Naabu spoke to Supt. Emmanuel Gyebi on the phone during his testimony on September 4, 2023, in response to a question from Hon. Petr Lanchene Toobu. However, he later reversed this statement during his appearance before the Committee on October 10, 2023.”

The committee recommended that both officers face severe penalties for their actions.

“The Committee believes that Supt. Asare and Supt. Gyebi may have acted in contempt of Parliament under Order 30 of the Standing Orders of Parliament (2000), as amended by Order 13(1) of the Standing Orders of Parliament (2024). Therefore, the matter should be referred to the Privileges Committee for appropriate action.”

In the leaked tape, the three officers were allegedly recorded discussing the removal of the Inspector-General of Police with Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party.
