Committee Inspects Textbook in Basic Schools in Central Region

The Government Assurance Committee of Parliament recently conducted a working visit to selected primary schools in the Central Region. According to Committee Chairperson Patricia Appiagyei, this visit was to verify whether the Minister of Education, Hon. Yaw Osei Adutwum, had fulfilled his promises regarding the delivery of textbooks to primary schools in the region.

The schools included in the visit were the Islamic Research School in Awutu Senya East, Osubonpayin Ateibu MA Basic School in Effutu, Otapirow DA Basic School in Gomoa Central, Swedru Salvation Army School for the Deaf in Agona West, Apewosika MA Basic School in Cape Coast Metro.

After the inspection, during a press briefing, it was revealed that only some of the visited schools had received the complete set of textbooks. The Committee expressed dissatisfaction with the current distribution system, as some books intended for these schools were still packed at the depot, awaiting collection. This was mainly due to financial difficulties faced by the schools, leaving them with no means to obtain textbooks.

Another issue that came to light was the need for proper accounting systems for the books received in all the visited schools. To address this problem, the Head Teachers requested the Committee’s assistance establishing a district supply depot in Winneba. Such a depot would alleviate the burden on schools, as they would no longer have to travel to Cape Coast to collect the books.

It is worth noting that in 2022, the Education Minister informed the Parliament that his Ministry would supply textbooks to all basic schools in the Central Region. The Committee’s visit aimed to verify the Minister’s claim. As a result of their findings, the Education Minister will be summoned to the Parliament by the Committee to explain the situation.
