The Court of Appeal unanimously overturned the Accra High Court’s ruling to restart the trial of former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board, Dr. Stephen Opuni. Presiding judge Kwasi Anokye Gyimah, who took over from retired Justice Clemence Honyenugah, deemed it unfair to continue the case due to numerous allegations after five years.
However, Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame appealed the High Court’s decision, arguing it violated the principles of a fair trial to start the case anew. On July 3, the Court of Appeal granted the Attorney-General’s application, overturning the previous decision. Justice Gyimah, known for being tough and principled, has been replaced by Justice Aboagye Tandoh of the Winneba High Court. Dr. Opuni and businessman Seidu Agongo are on trial for allegedly causing the state a financial loss of over GH¢217 million.
